At least 27 people were killed and 22 others were left critically injured after a massive fire ripped through a crowded bar in Bangkok late on Sunday night. The tragic incident occurred at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao in the city’s popular Chatuchak district, where the blaze spread rapidly, trapping dozens of customers inside.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started near the stage before quickly engulfing the venue. The flames reportedly caused a power outage, filling the bar with thick smoke and creating panic among customers. Videos shared on social media showed people screaming as they rushed toward the exits, with some escaping while their clothes were on fire.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after midnight and managed to bring the blaze under control within about 30 minutes. During rescue operations, they discovered most of the victims inside a bathroom, where many had apparently taken shelter in an attempt to escape the flames and smoke. More than 60 people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Preliminary findings from Bangkok’s disaster mitigation department suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air-conditioning unit. Officials also believe flammable ceiling decorations may have helped the fire spread more quickly. Authorities are further investigating reports that the emergency exit may have been blocked, after several unconscious victims were found nearby.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the site on Monday, said a musician performing at the bar told him there was a loud blast before smoke and flames rapidly filled the building, forcing people to flee in panic. Initial investigations indicate that many victims died from smoke inhalation.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether safety regulations were violated. The tragedy has once again raised concerns over fire safety standards in Thailand, where similar deadly incidents have occurred despite repeated promises to strengthen building and electrical safety measures.
