Heavy Rain and Landslides Cause Major Damage in Nepal’s Manang

Heavy rainfall has triggered floods and landslides in Chame, the headquarters of Nepal’s Manang district, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Several areas have been inundated by floodwater and mud following days of continuous rain.

According to local reports, five houses in Chame were completely damaged, while two wooden bridges and two causeways were also swept away by flooding. Around 10 houses in Tal village were reported to have been inundated.

The situation became particularly dangerous after a landslide fell into the Marsyangdi River in Chame on Sunday, partially obstructing its flow. Authorities warned residents living along the river and in nearby settlements to remain alert because the landslide was still active and changes in the river’s flow could pose additional risks.

Residents in several affected areas moved to forests and higher ground for safety as the situation worsened. Reports said no deaths had been reported in Chame from the floods and landslides, while authorities continued monitoring the area and assessing the damage.

By Monday, September 28, the situation had started to improve as rainfall eased and the Marsyangdi River level fell. Some displaced residents began returning home, although authorities said mud and debris remained a concern and continued caution was necessary.
