Authorities have issued a flood alert along the Chenab River after spillway gates of India’s Salal Dam were opened amid concerns over rising water levels. The development has raised concerns in downstream areas of Pakistan, particularly around the Marala Barrage and nearby regions.
According to reports, Indian authorities had issued an advisory regarding possible silt flushing at the Salal Dam, with the opening of the spillway gates potentially causing a significant rise in water levels in the Chenab River. Pakistani authorities subsequently placed vulnerable areas on high alert and directed relevant departments to closely monitor the river and maintain flood safety arrangements.
The latest situation comes as Pakistan continues to face heavy monsoon rains and increased river flows. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of high flood conditions in the Chenab, while the National Disaster Management Authority has also cautioned that high flood levels may occur at Marala. Residents living near the riverbanks and low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.
