ISLAMABAD — A young woman identified as Hina Zarif was allegedly killed at her family home in Islamabad after reportedly refusing a forced marriage, according to preliminary information. The case has raised serious concerns about forced marriages, domestic violence and violence against women in the name of honour.
According to available details, Hina had reportedly left her family home around six months ago after allegedly being forced to marry her cousin. She had reportedly complained of physical abuse and later obtained khula through the court.
Hina subsequently returned to Islamabad from Lahore on August 13 after her father allegedly assured her that she would be safe at the family residence. However, on the night of August 17, she was allegedly shot dead at the house.
Preliminary reports allege that Hina’s father, brother, former husband and maternal aunt were involved in the incident. Police are also investigating allegations that family members attempted to conceal her death and secretly bury her. The matter reportedly came to light after a neighbour alerted the authorities.
Islamabad Police registered a case at Koral Police Station and arrested Hina’s father and other suspects. Investigators are now working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death and establish the individual roles of those allegedly involved.
The case has once again highlighted concerns over the protection of women who reject forced marriages or return to their families seeking safety. It has also renewed calls for stronger measures against domestic violence and honour-based violence.
The allegations remain subject to investigation, and all accused persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law. A fair and transparent investigation, followed by due legal process, will be essential to establish the facts and ensure justice for the deceased.
