RAWALPINDI: Heavy monsoon rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Rawalpindi, with several roads and low-lying areas inundated as water levels in Nullah Lai continue to rise.
Videos circulating on social media show floodwater covering roads and partially submerging vehicles in different parts of the city. The situation has caused serious disruption for residents and motorists, while authorities remain on high alert.
According to officials, Nullah Lai reached dangerous levels after intense rainfall in its catchment areas. The water level at Katarian rose above the evacuation threshold, while the level at Gawalmandi also increased significantly. Residents living near the nullah and in vulnerable low-lying areas were advised to move to safer locations.
Rawalpindi authorities have declared a rain emergency and deployed WASA teams, heavy machinery and Rescue 1122 personnel in affected areas. Emergency measures have also been taken in several locations to deal with accumulated rainwater and possible flooding.
The heavy rainfall has also affected daily life across Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Educational institutions in Rawalpindi were closed as a precaution, while residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert to further rises in water levels.
