A fire broke out in the gynaecology ward of Lahore General Hospital on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of around 70 people, including pregnant women, patients and attendants.
According to hospital sources, the fire was reportedly caused by a short circuit in electrical wiring installed in the ceiling. Thick smoke quickly spread through the ward, creating panic among patients and hospital staff.
Hospital staff and emergency teams responded quickly and moved people to safety. Firefighters brought the blaze under control before it could spread to other parts of the hospital. No deaths or major injuries were reported.
A security guard reportedly developed breathing difficulties after inhaling smoke during the incident. He was shifted to the hospital’s emergency department for treatment, and hospital authorities later said that his condition was out of danger.
The incident comes only days after a deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, where 14 newborns lost their lives. The latest incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in public hospitals.
