The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is modernising Pakistan’s identity system with QR-enabled CNICs and self-service facilities aimed at making identity verification and registration services faster and more convenient.
Under changes notified by the federal government in February 2026, QR codes have been formally introduced as a security and verification feature for national identity documents. The updated framework allows QR technology to be used instead of the traditional microchip, supporting faster verification through digital systems.
The new CNIC format includes a machine-readable QR code that can be used for identity verification. NADRA says QR-based documents can support quick and secure authentication, including through its digital identity services.
Citizens with existing CNICs do not need to replace their cards immediately. NADRA continues to provide different CNIC formats, including standard, Smart CNIC and QR-code versions, with existing documents remaining usable according to their validity and expiry status.
Alongside the updated identity documents, NADRA has introduced self-service kiosks at selected registration and Mega Centres across Pakistan. The kiosks allow citizens to complete several identity-related requests independently, helping reduce waiting times and queues.
Through the self-service facilities, citizens can access services such as CNIC and NICOP renewal, replacement of lost or damaged cards and certain other identity-related requests. The availability of individual services may vary by centre.
NADRA is also expanding digital access through the PakID mobile application, which allows citizens to apply for and manage several identity services remotely. The authority says its digital identity system is designed to reduce paperwork, repeated visits and processing delays.
The latest measures are part of NADRA’s broader effort to shift identity verification and public services towards faster digital systems while strengthening security and making services more accessible to citizens.
