Trump Declares US ‘Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz’, Announces 20% Toll on Cargo

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will take on the role of the “Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz” and introduce a 20% transit charge on cargo passing through the strategically important waterway.

According to Trump, the new policy is aimed primarily at Iranian ships and businesses linked to Iran, while vessels from other countries will continue to use the strait under the new system. He said the fee would help cover the cost of protecting and securing one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global trade corridor through which a large share of the world’s oil and gas supplies is transported. Any changes affecting the route could have a significant impact on international shipping, energy prices, and global trade.

Trump’s announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. The proposed transit charge is expected to draw international attention, with analysts closely watching its potential effects on global markets, regional security, and diplomatic relations.
