Pakistan’s 21-year-old fast bowler Razaullah turned an unexpected Test call-up into a memorable international debut at Edgbaston, immediately making his mark against England. The young pacer claimed the prized wicket of England captain Joe Root with his first Test wicket before later dismissing opener Emilio Gay for 60. He finished the opening day with impressive figures of 2 for 42.
Born on April 5, 2005, in Mardan, Razaullah has represented Peshawar Region in domestic cricket and had only played eight first-class matches before receiving his Test opportunity. He also made his Pakistan Super League debut for Rawalpindi earlier this year, appearing in two matches and taking three wickets.
His journey to England was almost as dramatic as his debut. Reports said Razaullah did not have a passport when he was informed about his selection, while his phone was reportedly switched off when selectors attempted to contact him. The news eventually reached him in his village, with arrangements then made for him to obtain the necessary travel documents and join the Pakistan squad in England.
Razaullah was one of three Pakistan players handed their Test debuts in the third match at Edgbaston, alongside Ghazi Ghori and Mohammad Imran. The changes came after Pakistan’s heavy defeat in the second Test, which led to a major reshuffle of the squad.
After Pakistan were bowled out for 133 on the opening day, Razaullah provided the visitors with a much-needed boost. His dismissal of Root in his very first over became the standout moment of his debut, before he returned to remove Gay and end England’s 104-run partnership with Harry Brook.
Razaullah’s debut became even more remarkable later in the match. On the third day, the young pacer smashed 81 runs from just 63 balls, including nine sixes, while batting at No. 9. He also became the first Pakistan batter to score a Test-debut fifty in fewer than 45 balls, reaching the landmark in 43 deliveries.
Although England eventually completed a 3-0 series victory, Razaullah emerged as one of the biggest positives for Pakistan. His combination of pace, wicket-taking ability and fearless batting has given fans a glimpse of a promising young talent who could have a bright future in international cricket.
