A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, causing widespread damage across several parts of the country. The earthquake was centered near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department and was strongly felt in cities including Armenia, Pereira, Manizales and Cali.
In Armenia, the University of Quindío reportedly suffered structural damage following the strong tremors. As a precaution, students, faculty and other staff were evacuated from the institution while the condition of the affected buildings was assessed.
The university also suspended academic and administrative activities as a safety measure. Authorities and university officials are expected to carry out further structural inspections before deciding when normal activities can resume.
The earthquake caused significant destruction across western Colombia, with buildings collapsing and emergency services carrying out rescue operations in several affected areas. The disaster has resulted in a large number of deaths and injuries, while search-and-rescue teams continue to look for people who may remain trapped under damaged structures.
