Heavy rainfall triggered devastating flash floods in Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan province, causing widespread destruction in the provincial capital, Parun, and surrounding areas. The floods swept through communities, damaging homes, shops, farmland, vehicles and public infrastructure.
According to Afghan authorities, at least 23 people have died, around 80 others have been injured, and approximately 100 people remain missing as rescue teams continue searching the affected areas. The figures are preliminary and could change as emergency operations continue.
The flooding caused severe property damage, with reports indicating that seven houses were completely destroyed and 23 others partially damaged. Around 70 shops were also destroyed, while dozens of vehicles were damaged and several hotels were affected by the floodwaters.
Dramatic footage from Parun showed mud, rocks and debris covering areas where buildings once stood. Residents and rescue workers have been working alongside heavy machinery to clear the destruction and search through the rubble for survivors and missing people.
Authorities have deployed emergency teams to the affected areas, while search and rescue operations remain underway. Officials have also warned residents to stay away from flood-prone areas as further heavy rain and flash flooding could worsen the situation in parts of Afghanistan.
