A five-storey building housing a boys’ hostel collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of New Delhi, triggering a major rescue operation. The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, was being used as student accommodation.
Rescue teams, including police, firefighters and disaster response personnel, have been working through the rubble to locate people who may still be trapped. Earthmoving equipment and sniffer dogs are also being used in the search operation. Some people trapped beneath the debris were reportedly able to contact others and call for help.
The death toll has risen as rescue efforts continue, with reports confirming at least six fatalities and several injuries. Officials have warned that the number could increase as rescuers continue clearing the collapsed structure and searching for survivors.
The building was reportedly several decades old, and construction or repair work was underway in the basement before the collapse. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the disaster, while rescue operations remain focused on reaching anyone still trapped under the debris.
