Rawalpindi: Punjab is preparing for a major overhaul of primary education, with the provincial government approving the replacement of the existing curriculum for Classes I to V from the start of the new academic year in April 2027.
The Punjab School Education Department has completed work on the new curriculum, which has now been sent to the Punjab Chief Minister’s Secretariat for final approval. Once cleared, the proposal is expected to be presented before the provincial Cabinet at its next meeting.
The move is aimed at reshaping the learning experience for primary school students by making the curriculum simpler, reducing the academic burden and giving greater importance to modern skills.
New course content for Classes I to V
According to Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar, the new curriculum has been finalised and will introduce fresh course content across all five primary classes from the 2027-28 academic session.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives of the Punjab Teachers’ Union, the minister said the government had focused on simplifying the curriculum so that students could engage with their studies more effectively.
The revision will cover Classes I, II, III, IV and V, meaning students across the entire primary section will move to the new course structure simultaneously.
Fewer books, lighter academic load
One of the key changes under the proposed curriculum is a reduction in the number of textbooks.
The education department believes that cutting down the number of books will help reduce the academic pressure on young students and allow them to focus more effectively on understanding concepts rather than simply completing a large volume of course material.
The new approach is expected to place greater emphasis on quality of learning rather than the quantity of content students are required to cover.
Greater focus on technology and computers
Technology education will also receive greater attention under the new curriculum.
The government plans to strengthen information technology and computer education at the primary level, reflecting the growing importance of digital skills in education and the modern workplace.
The emphasis on technology is expected to introduce students to essential digital concepts at an earlier stage of their education.
Cabinet approval next
Although the curriculum has been prepared and sent to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, the process is not yet complete.
The proposal is expected to go before the Punjab Cabinet for final consideration and approval at its next meeting.
If approved, the new curriculum will be implemented across Classes I to V from April 1, 2027, marking one of the province’s major changes to primary education in recent years.
The government’s challenge now will be to ensure that teachers, schools and education officials are adequately prepared before the new academic session begins, so that the transition to the revised curriculum is carried out smoothly.
