Saudi Arabia Issues Emergency Alerts for Makkah, Jeddah and Taif Amid Rising Houthi Tensions

Saudi Arabia issued emergency alerts in Makkah, Jeddah and Taif on Tuesday, September 15, warning residents of a potential danger and instructing them to move indoors and follow official safety instructions. The alerts were sent through the country’s National Early Warning Platform for Emergencies.

The warning in Makkah was particularly significant as it was the first such alert for the holy city during the current escalation, according to reports. Residents were advised to stay away from open areas, windows, balconies and rooftops and to seek shelter inside buildings until the danger had passed.

Saudi Civil Defence later announced that the immediate danger had passed in the affected areas. Authorities urged residents to continue following official instructions, avoid unnecessary gatherings and refrain from filming or photographing the situation.

The alerts came amid a sharp increase in attacks involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia. On September 14, Saudi officials said Houthi forces launched ballistic missiles and drones toward Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif, leaving 13 civilians with minor to moderate injuries and damaging seven homes and two vehicles.

Saudi Arabia has also reported attacks affecting parts of its energy infrastructure in recent days. The developments have increased concerns over regional security and the safety of important Red Sea routes, including the strategically significant Bab al-Mandab area. Reuters reported that Houthi forces have also been advancing along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

The latest alerts highlight the widening security concerns in the region, although Saudi authorities did not initially publicly specify the exact nature of the potential danger behind Tuesday’s warnings. The situation remains closely monitored as tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis continue.
