South Korea: Geoje and Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province have been hit by torrential rain during the three-day Liberation Day holiday, causing flooding, landslides and evacuations. Geoje recorded more than 700 millimeters of rainfall over the holiday period, with more than 400mm falling between Sunday night and early Monday.
Authorities issued an emergency disaster alert to all residents of Geoje at around 2:10 a.m. Monday, warning of possible landslides and river flooding. Residents were urged to move to safe areas as heavy rain continued to create dangerous conditions.
A landslide struck an apartment complex in Okpo-dong, Geoje, at around 4:42 a.m. The landslide covered a first-floor apartment unit, and authorities reported that at least one resident was killed.
More than 20 emergency calls were also received in Geoje from Sunday night into Monday morning. Residents sought help after becoming trapped or isolated in flooded homes and vehicles.
Several rivers overflowed, while roads in different parts of the city were submerged, making it difficult for emergency crews to reach some affected areas. Rescue and emergency teams continued responding to reports of flooding and other rain-related incidents.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as further heavy rainfall could increase the risk of additional flooding and landslides in affected areas.
