US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran, saying Tehran would face a much more powerful American response if it retaliates against the latest US strikes.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said US forces were carrying out what he described as “large and powerful” strikes against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. He said the action was in response to what he described as Iran’s failed attempt to place sea mines in the strategic waterway, as well as the firing of eight missiles at a US military base in Jordan.
Trump claimed that there are currently no mines in the Strait of Hormuz, saying they had either been removed or detonated. He also said all eight missiles fired at the US base in Jordan had been intercepted. Jordan’s military has separately said its air defence systems intercepted eight Iranian missiles that entered the country’s airspace.
Trump warned that any Iranian retaliation would lead to an even tougher US response. He also referred to an even larger potential attack that he said was “waiting in the wings,” warning that its consequences for the Islamic Republic could be extremely severe.
The latest escalation comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, a major international shipping route. US Central Command said American forces had launched strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets following what it described as recent attempted attacks on commercial shipping and US personnel in the region.
The developments have raised fresh concerns about a wider escalation in the region, particularly as Iran has threatened to respond to the latest American attacks.
