A 16-year-old California lifeguard, Ryder Williams, is being praised for his bravery after rescuing a 10-year-old boy who was swept into the Pacific Ocean by powerful waves at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz.
Ryder, who was on duty at the time, immediately rushed into the dangerous surf after the boy was knocked down by a large wave and carried into the water. Dramatic footage recorded by a bystander showed the teenage lifeguard battling huge waves while holding tightly onto the child.
Despite being repeatedly hit and tossed around by the powerful surf, Ryder refused to let go of the boy. Several bystanders attempted to help, but the strong waves forced them to retreat. A fellow lifeguard eventually reached Ryder and helped bring the child safely back to shore.
Ryder’s father, Shane Williams, said his son told him that he simply could not allow the boy to die. Shane became emotional while recalling his son’s determination and said he was extremely proud of him. He added that Ryder did not consider himself a hero and believed he had simply done what any lifeguard would have done in the same situation.
According to his father, Ryder has been preparing for moments like this from a young age. He learned to swim as a child, later became involved in water polo and completed years of junior lifeguard training before joining the California State Parks lifeguard academy.
The rescue was Ryder’s first of his career. His father said the teenager was also involved in another rescue shortly after finishing his shift, helping save two more people who were in trouble in the water. That rescue, however, was not captured on video.
The dramatic footage of Ryder’s first rescue quickly spread across social media, with many people praising the teenager for his courage. Ryder, who does not use social media, has reportedly remained largely unaware of the attention surrounding the viral video.
The rescue took place during dangerous ocean conditions, with authorities warning about powerful waves and rip currents. Officials said the lifeguard district carried out 34 rescues over the weekend, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by lifeguards in the area.
Shane, a retired firefighter, said watching his son remain calm and determined during such a dangerous situation made him incredibly proud. He added that Ryder viewed the incident simply as part of his responsibility and duty as a lifeguard.
