Veteran Pakistani actress Saba Faisal has sparked a new discussion on social media after comments she made about changing attitudes toward marriage and divorce began circulating online. In the video, Faisal recalled how divorce was viewed by families in the past, saying that the breakdown of a marriage was once treated as a deeply painful and serious matter. She also suggested that some people today appear to move on from divorce more casually.
Faisal recalled that families once went through a period of mourning after a divorce and that parents, particularly fathers, could feel deeply embarrassed when their daughter’s marriage ended. She contrasted this with what she described as a more relaxed attitude toward separation today, including situations where a divorced woman may travel, take time for herself and then continue with her life.
Her comments drew a strong response from actress Hira Khan. In an Instagram Story, Khan argued that women should not be pressured to remain in marriages at the cost of their safety or dignity. She also referred to the right of a woman to seek khula and questioned the idea that divorce should automatically be treated as a source of shame.
Actress Zoya Nasir also reacted to the discussion, describing the narrative as “dangerous and twisted” in a social media response. Her comments added to the growing conversation about marriage, divorce, social expectations and women’s choices.
The controversy has also brought Saba Faisal’s daughter, actress Sadia Faisal, into the discussion. Sadia responded to Hira Khan’s criticism on social media, questioning her remarks and defending her mother. She also shared a post referring to Hira’s comments and wrote, “I wish I could see this so called actress one day!” before adding, “Behan kon ho tum!”
The exchange has once again sparked a wider debate online about how divorce is viewed in Pakistani society, whether changing attitudes reflect greater acceptance and independence, and how public figures discuss sensitive family and social issues.
