Thousands of people gathered in the Spanish town of Buñol on Wednesday for the annual La Tomatina, one of the world’s most unusual and colourful food festivals. Participants took part in a huge tomato fight, covering the streets and themselves in tomato pulp.
The festival brought together thousands of local and international visitors, who threw ripe tomatoes at one another during the hour-long celebration. As the battle continued, large quantities of tomato pulp filled the streets, turning much of the town bright red.
La Tomatina is held every year on the last Wednesday of August and dates back to 1945. The event has grown into an internationally recognised attraction and continues to draw visitors from around the world.
The 2026 celebration once again transformed Buñol into a sea of red as revellers enjoyed the chaotic but traditional event. Once the tomato fight ended, participants began cleaning themselves and the streets as the town returned to normal.
